PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE

Definition

                To mention a particular action which is taking place at the time of speaking and is in progress, something not  finished still

     (1)      I am writing a letter.
     (2)     The train is running late.

The Four Kind Of Tenses

 (1)      Simple or Indicative Tense
 (2)      Continuous  Tense
 (3)      Perfect  Tense
 (4)      Perfect Continuous Tense

Construction of Present Continuous Tense

 (1)   Subject + Is/am/are +verb+ ing + object
                                                 (Active voice)
 (2)   Subject + is/am/are + being + third form
         verb + by + object
                                                 (Passive voice)
Introduction of Present continuous Tense

(a)           If it is a situation and not am not am activity, we use the progressive tense.
                He is sitting in the last row.

(b)         If the progressive form is used to express the act of perceiving, it indicates something that is continuous over a much longer period.
             I am seeing much better since my operation.

 (c)         The use of progressive form of the present tense is usual, not the simple form, in the passive voice
              when it refers to the future.
             The case is being discussed at the next board meeting.

(d)        When the interrogative form is used the  Continuous form is to be used.

  Examples

Active – Passive  Voice

1          I am reading an  interesting book.      (A.V.)                        
            An   interesting  book  is  being  read by  me.   (P.V.)

2         Santa    is knocking  at  the door.    (A.V.)            
           The    door  is   being   knocked  at   by   Santa.  (P.V.)

3         The workers are    digging a pit. (AV)                                
           A pit is being dug by the workers. ( PV)   
                  
4         Why are you looking at me? (AV)                               
           Why am I being looked at by you ? (PV)   
              
       How is he painting that picture ?     (AV)
          How is that picture being painted by him? (PV)    
          
6         Is your brother using the computer now ? (AV)              
           Is the computer being used by your brother now?  (PV)
         
7          They are listening to a music concert now. (AV)
            A music concert is being listened to by them now.   (PV)

8         You are reading a nice poem now. (AV)                       
            A nice poem is being read by you now.   (PV)

Passive To Active Voice

  1.       The road is being repaired now.  (PV) 
            They  are repairing the road now. (AV)

 2.       The animals are being fed at this hour.    (PV)
           They are feeding the animals at this hour. (AV)

 3.       Is anybody being disturbed now ?              (PV)
          Am is disturbing anybody now ?              (AV)

 4.       By whom is this pit being dug ? (PV)                           
          Who is digging this pit ?             (AV)                                      

 5.      What is being written on the board there? (PV)           
         What are they writing on the board there? (AV)          

 6.     Why are the logs being shifted now ? (PV)                  
         Why are they shifting the logs now ? (AV)               

 7.     The meal is being prepared by my mother now ?  (PV)
         My mother is preparing the meal now ?         (AV)

Structure of Negative Continuous Tense

 Subject + is/am/are + not + verb + ing +object               (Active voice)

 Subject + is/am/are +not + being + Tired form of verb+ by + object    (Passive voice)

Negative Tenses

(1) Rutwa is not sweeping the room now.                 (AV)
       The room is not being swept by Rutwa now.        (PV)

(2)  Neelam is not doing it well now.                            (AV)
    It is not being done well by neelam now.              (PV)

(3)  I am not thinking about your case now.                 (AV)
   Your case is not being thought about by me now. (PV)
